Reminder to All Students!
Make the computer registration process hassle-free so you do not experience any delay in getting online when you arrive on campus. Test your computer at http://testme.resnet.stonybrook.edu before the new semester begins to make sure it has the most recent Windows Updates and a legitimate anti-virus software program. This may take some time, so Client Support recommends doing it a week before you arrive back on campus.
Windows XP users: You need to upgrade your operating system to Service Pack 3
Windows Vista users: You need to upgrade your operating system to Service Pack 1
Microsoft Office 2007 users: You need to upgrade to Office Service Pack 1
To perform these upgrades, go to your computer's Start menu and click on All Programs and then Windows Update or you can open Internet Explorer and under Tools you will find Windows Update. You want to Check for updates or View available updates and then Install the Updates.
If you have not already done so, Client Support urges you to uninstall your current anti-virus software and replace it with Symantec AntiVirus which can be downloaded for free from Softweb at http://softweb.cc.sunysb.edu.
Completing these upgrades is absolutely necessary in order for your computer to pass CAT (the Client Assessment Tool). You need to pass CAT before you can register your computer on the university network. This does not apply to Mac or Linux users, who should be able to proceed right to registration.
If you are off-campus and having trouble administering these upgrades during the month of August, call Client Support for remote assistance (631) 632-9800.
Members of the Division of Information Technology will be available to assist students with computer registration on Saturday, Aug. 30, Sunday, Aug. 31 and Monday, Sept. 1 from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. in the Traditions Lounge located in the Student Activities Center. Students can also bring their computers to the Drop-in Service located in the Client Support Student Service Center on the fifth floor of the Melville Library.
